Between telework, travel, sick leave and annual leave, many federal offices are occupied only a fraction of the time. Most employees do not need a permanent office. Federal agency’s physical footprint could be greatly reduced if employees scheduled the use of a shared office on an as needed basis and were not assigned permanent office space.
Most work files should be stored on a server. Employees with appropriate access authorization could access their files from any work location. Personal property could be stored in lockers and retrieved when the employee was physically in the office.
Rental, maintenance and energy costs could be greatly reduced.
