  Cross-Training

  I believe that a cross-training initiative should be created. With a large portion of the Federal workforce ready to retire within the next 10 years, cross-training would be a major benefit. A workforce with a wider knowledge base can be shifted more efficiently where needed. This will benefit the government as well as the employee. Management will be able to fill holes quickly as people retire, leave, or switch jobs. ...more »

  I believe that a cross-training initiative should be created. With a large portion of the Federal workforce ready to retire within the next 10 years, cross-training would be a major benefit. A workforce with a wider knowledge base can be shifted more efficiently where needed. This will benefit the government as well as the employee. Management will be able to fill holes quickly as people retire, leave, or switch jobs. Employees will gain a greater knowledge base of the functions of their office. Building knowledge will not only give the employee a greater understanding of their office, but also aid in potential job advancements in the future for the employee. We will be able to respond efficiently to voids, as well as prepare our future leaders.

  Positive Reinforcement

  I believe we need a better, more comprehensive system of recognizing our employees. In the face of budget cuts across the board, it is essential, now more than ever, to encourage employees to continue striving to improve their jobs and the government as a whole. I think a set of awards should be created that can be used on the office level, to be given out each month. If the budget does not allow for monetary rewards, ...more »

  I believe we need a better, more comprehensive system of recognizing our employees. In the face of budget cuts across the board, it is essential, now more than ever, to encourage employees to continue striving to improve their jobs and the government as a whole. I think a set of awards should be created that can be used on the office level, to be given out each month. If the budget does not allow for monetary rewards, than the rewardscould be in the form of a certificate, pin, parking spot, etc. There are plenty of ways to reward employees and show them they are doing a good job and are appreciated, without money. Let’s build a system that rewards and fosters innovation and good work in these uncertain (budgetary) times.

  Process Improvements

  I propose the government adopt an initiate that focuses on improving process we already have. Each employee, no matter the level, has processes they follow on a daily, monthly, quarterly, yearly basis. Let’s target these processes and find ways to improve and streamline them by creating workgroups in each agency. There are currently a number of issues that present opportunity. First off, most employees lack the voice to have their ideas heard. Let’s create an environment in which realistic ideas can be heard and given real thought on an office level. Secondly, because there is no formal process in which employees can submit efficiencies, and no time constraints, it is very easy to become discouraged and return to the status quo. How many improvements have fallen by the wayside because of impenetrable roadblocks? Finally, motivation. Employees need to be recognized for their ideas and improvements. The awards do not have to be monetary. Rewards could be in the form a certificate or a pin. Something to let them know that they did a good job and to encourage them to continue finding ways to improve their job. Also, cross-agency communication is a must. If one agency has an excellent process improvement that another agency could use, we must facilitate and encourage discussions between the two. Although independent, we are all part of the whole. We must work together to find, foster, and encourage improvements. In conclusion, if we focus on improving the little things, put the call to the common employee, give them a solid avenue to have process improvements heard, and recognize them, we will build a stronger, more efficient government, from the ground up.
