  National Sales Tax

  Abolish income tax and specific state taxes that differ from other states. Establish a nation-wide sales tax (arbitrarily, let's say 10-15% of which a percentage goes to the state). It allows citizens to have more income to spend and is fair and equitable to their spending. A person that buys a Lamborghini versus an Accord both pay the same percentage, but obviously the person that can afford the Lamborghini will end ...more »

  Abolish income tax and specific state taxes that differ from other states. Establish a nation-wide sales tax (arbitrarily, let's say 10-15% of which a percentage goes to the state). It allows citizens to have more income to spend and is fair and equitable to their spending. A person that buys a Lamborghini versus an Accord both pay the same percentage, but obviously the person that can afford the Lamborghini will end up paying a higher amount. With no income tax and a national sales tax, this captures all of the other people that have typically made money off-the-books (drug dealers, prostitutes, etc.). Citizens may reach outside the national sales tax in the age of globalization, however an import tax that is less attractive should deter a mass exodus of funds otherwise.

  Eliminate cash

  Go to a cell-phone and/or credit card based electronic payment economy. This would have several potential benefits. It would allow automated collection of a flat-rate consumption tax. It would complicate the transfer of funds for illegal activities, or hiding of income (other than barter). It would reduce the cost of producing, transporting, and circulating currency, coins, and paper checks. It would spur innovation on ...more »

  Go to a cell-phone and/or credit card based electronic payment economy. This would have several potential benefits.

  It would allow automated collection of a flat-rate consumption tax.

  It would complicate the transfer of funds for illegal activities, or hiding of income (other than barter).

  It would reduce the cost of producing, transporting, and circulating currency, coins, and paper checks.

  It would spur innovation on new business models enabled by the new technology.

  It would provide an evidence trail for civil/contractual legal actions.

  There would surely be privacy objections, and the impact of a system crash could be huge, but a discussion of the concept would be worthwhile, even if the idea were ultimately rejected.

  A Fair Tax to Help the Struggling Middle Class

  The middle class continues to lose spending power and is seeing a continuing lowering of their standards of living. Eliminate at least part of the income tax and institute a national Sales Tax, Value Added Tax or other consumption tax so that the 50% of the population that currently pay little or no tax, will bear the same brunt, and thus have the same stake in, government spending affairs. Eliminate at least part of the income tax and institute a national Sales Tax, Value Added Tax or other consumption tax so that the 50% of the population that currently pay little or no tax, will bear the same brunt, and thus have the same stake in, government spending affairs. It's not rocket science. If I payed no tax then I probably I wouldn't care how much the government spends. In fact I'd probably benefit if they spent even more and offered bigger "Earned Income Credit" and such. Move some of the burden from the middle class and on to the lower and welfare classes.

  Tax ALL Americans so we ALL Have a Stake.

  If 50% of the population pay little or no federal taxes, then 50% of the people won't give a darn how much money the federal government spends, and in fact probably want the federal government to spend more. Some kind of National Sales Tax is the only fair and rational and workable way to ensure EVERYBODY pays something and therefore EVERYBODY would have a stake in government spending.
