The average salary of many federal police officers at non-DHS buildings who are basically standing guard is over $70,000, and they make few to no arrests each year, and spend an extraordinary amount of funding operating as a police force. Most if not all of these security posts could be less costly to the federal government if contract guard service is implemented at those facilities. Then move a portion of the federal police force of these non-DHS buildings to the Federal Protective Service to patrol where needed and respond to crimes. Basically, much more consolidation is needed to reduce overall operating costs and to reach economy of scale by sharing equipment, vehicles and consolidating training. As officers retire or leave the police departments at non-DHS facilities, replace the positions with contract guards, and for every ten officers that leave, assign 1-2 positions to the Federal Protective Service.
