  Reform entitlement programs

  Overhaul the Social Security, Welfarem Medicade, and Medicare programs. The younger generation is paying into them and likely to get little out of them at the current rate.   Why are these programs manditory?

  What gives the government the right to force me to join their retirement program (Social Security)? What if I think it is mismanaged and that other programs are better run? Shouldn't I be able to choose how/where my money is invested? This is as stupid as them forcing everyone to use Fidelity, ING, or any other company.

  What gives the government the right to force me to support the poor and lazy (Medicaid and Welfare)? I support charities whom I think are run efficiently and do good. I should be able to choose whom to support and not forced to support a mismanaged program. Bad charities dies out and the efficient ones live one. Medicaid and Welfare should be forced to compete with other, likely more efficient, forms of charity.

  While some forms of Medicare are useful, the program as a whole promotes stupidity and waste. If I blow all my life savings I can qualify for medicare, while if I make smart, sound judgement and don't waste my money, I don't get any benefit from the program I spent years paying into. How is this fair? This program needs to be scaled back.

  In general, people should be held accountable for their lives and well being. If they are stupid and blow their money, they shouldn't expect government handouts, while those of us who save and are fiscally respobsible are forced to bail them out.

  Social Security Reform

  Stop allowing people to collect social security and continue to work at the same time. Social security is something that is supposed to help with retirement and not act as a second income when you get older. If the Government stopped this practice it would both save money and improve the unemployment rate. It would save money by not paying people who are still working. It would improve the unemployment rate by getting people to retire to collect unemployment. If the person leaves the workforce this would open up a position for someone else. This would lower the unemployment rate as someone collecting social security is not counted as unemployed and someone currently unemployed would be hired. This provides for someone else to pay into the social security system.

  Stop Giving Away $Billions To Other Countries

  One of the reasons the U.S. is becoming less competitive globally is because we are becoming weaker economically. I know the whole world has had economic problems over the pass couple years, but China and India are back on track again while we are still wallowing in increasing debt and over-spending.   One of the reasons the U.S. is becoming less competitive globally is because we are becoming weaker economically. I know the whole world has had economic problems over the pass couple years, but China and India are back on track again while we are still wallowing in increasing debt and over-spending.

  Our economic problems are not temporary. We have major looming issues primarily resulting from the ridiculous debt levels which is further fueled by unnecessary over-spending by the Govt. Some of the looming issues I see are massive underfunding of Social Security and Medicare, underfunded Govt pensions, taxes are rising (and going to rise much more), inflation has occurred already (trillions of new dollars printed backed by nothing tangible) and dramatic rising prices are inevitable, interest rates will be raised to fight inflation which means the interest on Govt debt will be rising as well. Furthermore, the U.S. is becoming less competitive "pricewise" in the global marketplace for 2 reasons: (1) salary demands are higher than most of the rest of the world (we don't want to change that one ;-) , and (2) the value of the dollar (relative to other currencies) is declining.

  One form of excessive spending I can't even figure out "why" we're doing it is we give away billions of dollars every year to other countries ... Why can't we just stop doing that (at least in most cases) for a couple of years or until we get our debt under control?

  Prisoners and Families collecting Social Security

  Need to get a hold on Inmates Social Security Numbers while Prisoners are in Jail we need the Prisons cooperating with us on a regular basis like a monthly report updated and run these numbers we possibly save millions of dollars going out the door.

  Voluntary Furlough

  Have permission to take off without pay for non-essential workers. Obviously, military personnel are essential. Give the paperpushers days off if they want.

  Camden NJ has mandated 22 days furloughed a year until they get their budget under control.

  If you do not come to work during the furlough, you DO NOT get paid. period. SSA payment center , one of the seven in the country, have been told to come in to work regardless of a furlough. In the past, everyone got paid EVEN if you did not come to work. SO, The TOP SALARIED people under the Regional Commisionner have been told NOT to come in.   We can make Social Security more solvent now and in the future by eliminating the benefit currently available to divorced spouses of Social Security beneficiaries.   Why should a divorced person receive a monetary benefit from the government simply because they were once married to someone who qualifies for SS benefits. Really? Especially when those of us who will rely heavily SS retirement benefits (that we have earned for ourselves) are being threatened with the possibility that we may not have that benefit due to insolvency of the program.

  I don't know how the "divorced and unremarried" provision made it in to the initial law, but it is completely non-sensical and inane to me. I also do not know how much money would be saved by eliminating this unearned SS benefit, but I am pretty sure it would be significant.

  Before Congress tries to scare people who have contributed to SS all their working lives that their earned benefits are likely to be reduced and/or delayed, stop giving away UNEARNED benefits to former spouses.

  I like most ideas on this website. I think that most ideas have come from somebody who is trying to do a great job at what they do. It has become so difficult to navigate through that, I have decided to take 15 minutes out of my day to dedicate to this at home on my own time.   I like most ideas on this website. I think that most ideas have come from somebody who is trying to do a great job at what they do.

  Stop Making Pennies & Keep Prices The Same, Save Billions

  If we stop minting pennies but keep prices at e.g. $19.96, then pay to the nearest Nickle= $20.00 we would then have an extra 1-4 cents per transaction for the millions of transactions daily and roll the 1-4 cents in to a strictly watched fund that would take care of Education, SS, Road Construction, and pay down on the Deficit. I do not see how this would be bad for anyone.

  It's costs millions to print the hard copy checks each month. Require by law, first, no one gets a paper check. Second, a law where all banks that are FDIC approved, cannot charge any person a fee of any type, for an account where a social security or SSi other disability check is deposited, and the reciepeint can make 2 free withdrawls a month as they see fit, if they want cash.   Limit Food Stamps

  I heard a story recently, regarding some immigrants. They have been here about 10 years, retired and are now drawing social security.........and getting food stamps. How is it that the tax payers have to bear the burden for this, when the sponsors of immigrants have to declare that they (the sponsors) have the means to support them so they don't become a burden to the tax payers. ICE needs to work more closely with ...more »

One solution, might be to require that the sponsors, put up a bond or agree to a lien against their house, if they have one, but too many are getting a free ride at the expense of the rest of us.

The cards are subject to loss, theft and fraud. Reprinting stolen or lost cards also costs money. SSA knows who "owns" each SSN and account. Why not simply mail the recipient a letter containing the SSN and a PIN or password that can be used to prove that the SSN belongs to that person, if necessary? Employers (and any other State or Federal agnecy) can use a Government-issued ID and eVerify to check SSN name/number matches. I have never in my life needed to physically present my SSN card to anybody, so I do not know when the card is used at all, but if it is currently being used in some capacity, I'm sure that the process could be replaced with the SSN/PIN/eVerify combination and a Government-issued ID.

  Reduce Wait Time for Retirement Pay

  With the growing number of FERS employees retiring or becoming eligible to retire, a system for checks and balances needs to be addressed to ensure retirees begin receiving their full entitlements within the first six months of retirement. This would limit the need for retirees to seek new employment and/or outside help.

  Poeple making over $250,000 when they retire should not be eligible for social secuirty payments. They should have to pay into it like everybody else to contribute to society, but should get nothing out when they retire.

  Remove cap on Social Security Taxes now!

  With all the talk of entitlement programs devouring our budget and a bleak future, why the heck do we still cap social security taxes? For 2011, the wage cap for SS taxes is $106,800 or roughly $4485.60 in paid SS taxes. Seriously, $4485 is like 2 months of SS checks when you retire.   Incentivise having Children

  Social Security was set up so that we pay for our parents retirement and our children pay for us. Take away the disincentives and stigma for having children, and add incentives (not welfare) for having children.   our government is like a family of 5 who lives in a million dollar house on an income of $40k/yr. Saving on groceries, selling a car, etc... would all be good ideas but until you get rid of the Million dollar mortgage you will always be broke. It is too much to ask taxpayers to support other people's children and then support ignorant behavior too. If they do, they'll have to juggle expenses and stretch budgets like everyone else does when they have more chidlren.

  When a mother with children needs to go on public assistance, she will name the father(s) of each of the children. That father, whether he can afford it or not, needs to be held liable and should owe the government every cent that the government spends on the support of their children. They may never be able to pay it back, but they will probably, eventually be able to pay something. Some limits may apply.

  Investing in America Savings Program

  Reward each U.S. Governmental Agency that does not spend every dollar that was budgeted and appropriated for by allowing them to save the money at the end of the fiscal year. This money could go into a centralized US Government investment account.   Reward each U.S. Governmental Agency that does not spend every dollar that was budgeted and appropriated for by allowing them to save the money at the end of the fiscal year. This money could go into a centralized US Government investment account. Recommend rewarding agencies that come in under budget with a recognition program based on the amount of money they saved proportional to their overall budget. Allow Agencies to save up their money and use it on a project or resource they really need in the future. Recommend not factoring savings amounts into their future budget either. The money that is saved/generated off of interest could go into paying off the national deficit, U.S. Savings Bonds, Social Security, etc. By rewarding Agencies for saving money it promotes an environment that rewards fiscal mindedness. If all agencies are promoting and participating, little savings and big savings alike will add up quickly. You could title it the "Investing in America Savings Program."

  There are many federal agencies that need to share information on a daily basis. For instance, the U.S. Attorney's handles SSDA appeals. For each person who appeals a SS decision at the federal level, their entire medical transcript must be mailed to the U.S. Attorney's office. SS pays approximately $30.00 to mail paper copies and another $5-$10 to mail the CD-ROMs of these same records. If there was a secure network ...more »

  We could scrap all current government-funded health insurance and health care and institute a self-sustaining National Health Insurance covering all citizens and paid for by all citizens, in part - with a National Sales Tax.   We could scrap all current government-funded health insurance and health care and institute a self-sustaining National Health Insurance covering all citizens and paid for by all citizens, in part - with a National Sales Tax. This would be an immediate shot in the arm for American industry and business, as well as provide a new flexibility for American workers. No American should have to depend on anyone else for their health insurance. It makes sense. The only way to ensure all Americans are insured is to insure all Americans. I have a viable plan based on a 4% National Sales Tax, a 3% payroll tax and a 4% corporate EBITA tax. This would fully fund our health insurance needs - $5000+ per capita indemnity - and insurance companies who suffer economic damage can be compensated with health trust money and through eminent domain arbitration. The day after a self-supporting National Health Insurance plan is put into place, the federal budget will be closer to balance as well as many states. P.S. as part of this plan, everybody will have to pay reasonable but mandatory copays, even the "poor".

  Take Fat People Off SSDI

  You don't need a study for this - many people are obviously eating themselves to the point where they are so fat they can't even walk. Then, I assume, they go on Social Security Disability. Make sure that obesity is not a claimable disability. These people must get off their fat buttocks' and work it off.Also drug addicts shouldn't be able to collect either.

  Get rid of Social Security for inmates that are locked up why is it that we house, feed and give them more money.Its not only Federal its also in state and county level also.
