Trim the Federal Workforce

The Federal Workforce is FAT. Everybody knows that. The only way to trim it is to identify the fat. I, of course, believe that the Executive branch has no real intention of cutting jobs, so I understand this is an exercise in public relations. But here goes:

Create an annonymous survey that all Federal employees would fill out. I think if done anonymously, the Federal workforce would identify excess employees. But the survey would have be worded very carefully.

With such a survey, excess employess could begin to be idenditified. But laying off employees is politically very difficult.

That's a start. You want to save hundreds of billions of dollars? Identify and trim the fat. The private sector does it all of the time. The Federal sector could do it too if it was more deliberate.

  1. I do not agree with the idea to trim the federal workforce. When President Clinton reduced the number of Federal employees they were replaced with higher paid contractors to perform the work the Government workerd had been performing. President Clinton was able to say how he reduced the Government workforce but very little mention was made to how much more the Government was paying for contractor services.

  2. I'm not talking about replacing civil servants with contractors. I'm talking about doing more with less people. We ALL know people are not fully employed. Get RID of the people who aren't fully employed. The problem is how to do that. I think a well thought out survey would be a good start.

  3. The idea is to replace quantity with quality. Frequently better quality can be used to replace quantity.

  5. Trim the high grades. Lately what they trim are low graded employees saving very little. Then in turn the work the low grades do such as delivery mail, filing, cleaning etc is now being accomplished by high grades. Big waste of tax payer funds.

  6. I agree completely. We should call it "grade creep."

  7. A simple suggestion: 3 strikes and you're out. If an employee is caught sleeping at their desk three times over a three month period, they are separated. I would imagine the workforce would see a reduction after three months and/or productivity would improve significantly.

  9. As the OP, I can say that is a fair comment. If a survey were to be devised, I would give an HONEST appraisal of my organization. I understand that talking about eliminating jobs is a VERY tricky undertaking. But if we don't start discussing these things, Congress WILL. Believe it.
