Social Security Should Be Means Tested

I agree to have my idea, not my name or information, posted online.:
Yes

Social Security should be means tested for income.

One should be able to withdraw all that has been deposited, over the course of however many months, and then folliowing that--usually it teakes less than 2 years to recover all that has been put in--following that, there should be a means-structure. Super-rich people--the ones who oppose paying their fair share, should not be collecting social security on the backs of younger workers. Social Security should be a baseline payment, as it was intended to be. Magazine articles have touted the idea that one can "payback" all the social security money received by an individual and then the person can reapply for benefits at a much higher rate. This is scamming the system. One hears commentators say that he or she "gives social security to charity", and sounds proud of it.

Give it to the Treasury and the American people---Give It Back.

  1. like the "check to give one dollar to" on your tax form, Soc. Sec. could have an annual "pay your soc. sec. forward to" with a check list of preferences. This way, people with sufficient means could direct their soc sec "entitlemenet" toward e.g. 1) pay down the debt 2) WIC 3)National Parks 4) Amtrack. etc. If the person who makes such an election has a significant change of circumstances, they should have an option to revise their "pay it forward" choice.

Excellent suggestion that should be implemented. It would cost nothing to have a check-off system as you describe. It's a way of "voting" as to how our tax dollars are spent. It would serve to remind people that we're in this together and that only together will it work.

Much more needs to be done to make people understand how the system works. It's only been a dozen years since SS sent out yearly statements as to projected benefit and what has been paid into the system. People were in the dark unless they made inquiry on their own. Show people how it works.

It will only inspire them to save for the future.

But also--they simply have to school people who say: "Leave the government out of my social security".
