Push (REEL) Mowers for Inmates

I agree to have my idea, not my name or information, posted online.:
Yes

A solution to save on fuel costs would be for Institutions to use push mowers instead of gasoline operated mowers. Not only does the government save money for fuel and maintenancer, but inmates are afforded health benefits by pushing the mowers, maintaining their physical fitness. Additionally, the environmental impact is aided in less carbon emisions. The cost of a gas powered mower is around 3 to 4 times what a manual push mower would cost. Also, the maintenance for a manual push mower is 10% of maintaining a gas powered mower.

  1. The grass clippings could also be used for composting for institutions with any type of gardening.

  2. Do they really let inmates use lawn mowers? As in, really big blades?

  3. We already do this at my institution, and it works well. The inmates have to work 5 times as hard to get the grass cut and it saves fuel too. The only problem with it comes from our Warden, who thinks it dose not look as pretty as they want it. OH well who says prison should be pretty!!

  5. Aned you have to admit, it does provide a subsatntial cost savings for the purchase of the manual mowers versus the power mowers. And inmates have a hard time breaking the manual ones because of the lower amount of parts in the production of them.

  7. Then let's make this the practice for ALL institutions. Saving money and energy is conducive to ALL Americans.

  8. I think the poster means a "reel mower" which is human-powered and doesn't use gasoline or oil-gas mixture.

  9. Thanks for the clarification of what I was trying to convey. I edited the post to alleviate any further confusion. You are, in fact, correct in the use of the reel mower versus push mower.

  10. We used one of those, until they took away all the grass. Now the inmates rake gravel all day. We save money and don't have patchy grass/ weeds to maintain. It also reduces the number of bunnies in the prison yard. They chew everything up.
