Public Service Draft

I agree to have my idea, not my name or information, posted online.:
Yes

I suggest we institute a modified draft (yes it's not a true Vietnam Era Draft) as part of our American way of life. This draft will prove to be the most efficient way to turn the US around and regain our standing as a super power and gain the investment of the American spirit that has become lost to so many of us.

That we draw up a constitutional citizenship plan for everyone. This plan institutes a draft into the US Work Corps. The majority will enlist into a four to six year tour of service in the US Military with academic testing (a modified version of the ASVAB) deciding which branch and, depending on availability, which MOS (job assignment). Conscientious Objectors will be allowed to serve in the Military Health Services or Chaplains Corps. You can break down the Military side into two categories. One being a military organization such as what we have now. The other being a Civil Service Police/ Emergency Response force to augment or replace the current police / first responders we have in larger cities. This will reduce local municipalities’ financial burden for a police force. A police force which will shrink over time due to lower crime rates. Just as in the current military these response personnel can be relocated on an immediate need basis. This will establish a large mobile group of trained emergency response personnel capable of responding to catastrophic situations such as hurricane aftermath. Think of this as FEMA being able to make one call and request five thousand bodies to help after a disaster, and they actually show up. The health services side can be stationed at hospitals and while they train for disaster assistance they can fill in where they are needed nation wide. We can call this a win win with the shortage of medical professionals we currently have.

The genius design of Draft (b) is pretty simple. It will be completely voluntary. By accepting the obligation and completing the tour of service you have earned the right of being an American Citizen. You are entitled any and all benefits entitled currently to a citizen of the United States. You are entitled to both Federal and State benefits and aid. If you choose not to serve then you are not entitled to any benefits as a Citizen. You will not be eligible to receive money or aid to help with Education, Welfare Programs, Social Security, Disability, Housing, or Medical Services.

This will eliminate 70% of the problems in the US in the next 10 to 20 years.

By doing this you will allow every single child in the US hope that they will be able to attain a job upon completion of high school. A job that will lead to career opportunities in the Federal Government and in the Private Sector. You can allow open borders and give migrants the tools and opportunities necessary to become productive citizens. You will allow anyone who chooses to motivate themselves to serve their country and become an active part of their community.

This allows a move productive American because of the job benefits. The military training will foster competitiveness and increased efficiency. This will foster more collaboration as American gets back to the vision of the Team Goal instead of the Me Goal. Candidates who choose not to make a career out of the military corps will have received leadership grooming and educational opportunities as part of their service. These perks will drive American business and productivity. These Citizen Soldiers will allow the growth of a diverse work force to help lead the US into the next generation.

You can even implement a type of Jr. ROTC for the civil side which will give teenagers something to do instead of getting in trouble. The scope and goal of this training can be to get kids interested in serving their community instead of just playing ball after school. The training here can start the assessment of a child’s interest for when they turn 18 and decide if serving their community / country is what they want. Most kids who turn 18 and graduate will be removed from just wondering the streets and hoping for a job. This will allow for a large cultural transfer and exposure to more of the world when young adults need it the most. A majority of these kids will no longer be content with just sitting around a house living the same way their parents did. And this will break most of our harmful cycles here in the US.

Building the country through investing in each one of our future citizens education, mentoring, and sense of serving the greater good is how other countries have out produced the United States in the past few years.

  3. While I can totally understand the point that you are trying to get across, there are many reasons why this can never happen in our country; the biggest reason is the Constitution.

I am a veteran of the Marine Corps, and I comment often that most Americans that lack the same experience I gained through service overseas and at home, do not truly appreciate the life and opportunities they have been given here in the United States.

What you are describing, sounds a lot like what some countries under dictators and the iron curtain of Socialism/Communism force upon their "citizens." There is no life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. A draft can't be voluntary. Also, voluntary is what we currently have in place... it's the US Military. 100% volunteer.

Also, if you are under the premise that it is volunteer and on an "if you want your citizenship, you will volunteer" basis... then this will cripple the US even more, considering that non-citizens can not be taxed, and that will be motivation for them to NOT volunteer.

Another point: There are no shortages of police/fire/EMS in this country. The lack of available qualified personnel is not the issue. The lack of funding at the municipality level is the issue. There are plenty of fully qualified, trained, licensed Police/Fire/EMS personnel. Their were at least 400 applicants to every 1 job opening when I was taking Civil Service exams after I got out of the Marine Corps. If you put more applicants into that bank of career, what do you suppose that will do to the economy? Create more unemployed Police/Fire/EMS.

Judging from the opening parts of your idea, I am going to go out on a limb here and say that you are a veteran as I am. I suggest you read the Constitution that you swore an oath to support and defend, and then re-read your idea.

As I said in the beginning, while I understand where you are going with this, it can never happen in this country.

  4. Not to mention the crippling cost of training, clothing, feeding, sheltering and oh yeah paying each "citizen" a salary and benefits during their mandatory, I mean voluntary Citizenship draft.

  5. Sounds a lot the theories of Robert A. Heinlein, in his books "Starship Troopers" and "Expanded Universe" as a matter of fact almost exactly like them.

So your what your saying is to stop rewarding people for doing absolutly nothing. Reduce the crippling cost of feeding, clothing, and sheltering the bums. Stop rewarding those of us who choose not to work and those who choose not to stay out of prison. To actually invest time and money in our children and the countries future instead of the dead wood adults. This will never work here in the US. The fact that you even mention keeping the borders open shows that you are too much of a rebel and should just stop trying. (at least your thinking outside the box)
