It currently have 75 votes. If you keep voting for multiple "work from home" ideas it will never get selected. Lets all try to stick to the same idea with the highest vote totals.
Users can vote for both if they want. It is not like this is one or the other.
I agree with this. Telework is essential to todays government and polies.
I think if we vote for several multiple idea they it is better. It shows that it is a common idea that has a lot of support. Disagree with comment 1 and 2, I voted for both.
Wow, 28 ideas in 10 days, you are a machine! Maybe instead of working for the federal government you should run for elected office and get some things done! You have a lot of ideas pent up in your head. I would have never thought of making tele work mandatory or passing immigration reform to get the government on track to being efficient. Awesome thanks for the ideas, keep em coming.
If something comes to mind I add it. Some are more commentary and several are ideas I submitted from last year. The key here is peer review - if it is good it can rise up and may get attention.
I do not agree in teleworking for Federal Gov't Employees -- only if maybe a "special project" with rush deadlines. Most government jobs are not productivity type jobs, therefore, it's not benefical for Government/taxpayers to pay Federal employees to work from home. I'm certain there is some and more abuse will occur.
If you mean make management allow eligible employees to telework, I'm for it. Don't want to mandate people to take telework.
This should work. But for most it does not. There are many reasons for shunning the TELE-WORK option. It is led by the same people who would not accept Alternate Work Schedules or compressed schedules. There is a basic insecurity issue behind all of this when it is carried this far. Incompetent managers do not want to have to answer any technical questions (because they cannot) so they want to be sure they have plenty of staff on hand at all times so they are never put on the spot. Then there is the insecure manager who feels as if their job is dependent upon how many people they have direct authority over. And then you have the ego-manager who loves being the boss and gets a kick out of ordering people around and finally, you have the micro-managing boss who must follow your work progress at every step to make sure you do it right...... Unfortunately the majority of managers I have run across in the past 25 years of working for the federal government fits into one of these categories. Tele-work or alternate scheduling does not work when you consistently have leadership of this caliber.
There were some interesting suggestions here addressing this; one being tie the amount of money saved through tele-work to the SES salary.
Previously, SES’ were given big bonuses for saving money but it was usually on the backs of their employees... they would have to be very careful how this one is worded...
Telework never works because most of the people given that option will be goofing off at home! Those that won't/don't will not have access to the information they need at home or a telework center and will be calling colleagues and not be able to collaborate with others at the office, there are some jobs that are amenable to working from home, and those private entities usually require office space in the home dedicated to that, pay for the office furniture and phone lines and insist that the person maintains a business like environment in that space, no barking dogs or kids crying. 99 percent of these jobs are not with the government. There is a reason we are public servants, because we serve the public from a federal building and not our living room. This whole idea is totally unprofessional and instead of employees abusiong purchase cards by going to strip clubs we are going to see the IG arresting people "working" while mowing thier lawns or sleeping. This may work for 1 percent of federal jobs for the rest it will be a nightmnare and PR disaster!
To the previous poster: it may not work for you, but anybody whose job depends on a phone and a computer can telework. In most positions like this, managers have all but given up any face-to-face interaction, so people could be anywhere in the world and still do their jobs. Most of us in the federal workforce take great pride in doing our jobs to the best of our ability.
most do, but the some do not, and just because you have a phone and computer does not mean your spouse, kid, neighbor wont be looking over your shoulder at my _____. insert: medical history, social security number, name, financial information, criminal history, contracting information etc. You know that thats the one thing that cnat be controlled in your living room and why this wont work on a large scale.
Addressing the original issue: Management will simply make every position ineligible for telework, so Presto! Chango! No telework problemo!. Until there is an incentive to reward, or punishment to force, management to implement telework, IT WILL NOT BE DONE!
