Highspeed rail in the Northeast - Maglev from D.C. to NYC

I agree to have my idea, not my name or information, posted online.:
Yes

The high speed rail projects that were proposed were in the wrong states. We need to redirect those funds to a maglev from Washington D.C to New York City. We need to connect our leadership capital with our financial capital. Agencies would be able tl locate up the corridor and have cheaper travel. Since this will take a load off roads then it can be built with government funds and leased to a commercial operator to use and maintain and earn a profit. Since the infrastructure is leased the deal must place caps on rate increases - they must be based on increasing cost and not increasing profitability.

This would help Amtrak not need govt funds and you could get from DC to New York in 1 hour. The existing Accela rail lines in the corridor can be worked with the local commuter rails that are operated by Amtrak so that the additional tracks planned won't need to be added!

This is a great idea. Why the mid west or Florida if they don't want it. We use rail here.

  3. Just for a reference a federal railroad study of a maglev in 2003 estimated the cost to be around $111M per mile. Probably could double that number now. The total cost for a rough wag could be in the neighborhood of $40B more or less. Total revenues for Amtrak are around $2.3B/yr.

So you would like people to move faster between cities but this would be an extraordinarily expensive way to allow a few people to travel.

There are probably ways to make it cheaper, like using existing roads for right of way, minimizing tunnels, etc...

  4. Great idea for high speed there! They need it more than anyone else.

  5. Found several studies online that said $15-20 million/mile that were newer than the one referenced in the comment. That brings the total to about 3.9 billion ( asuming 17.5 mil figurefor distance between cities).

Who wouldn't want the ability to travel this in an hour? The current high speed train takes 3 hours and countless bus lines run constantly.

This is as green as it gets.

  8. Maiximize system with the highest population run:

    Chicago-Detroit-Buffalo-Rochester-Syracuse-Albany-Boston-NYC-Philadelphia-Baltimore-Washington DC.

If that proves effective, move on but if that circuit doesn't work, nothing will.

  9. Good high-speed rail (MAGLEV) needs fewer stops to be effective. It’s the same principle as an airline flight.

CHI to NYC -and- NYC to PHILY to DC

Philly is iffy at best, Detroit is dead (sorry, motor city). After that, infill the other cities with improved commuter rail services (like Acela Express).

  11. Wow, 28 ideas in 10 days, you are a machine! Maybe instead of working for the federal government you should run for elected office and get some things done! You have a lot of ideas pent up in your head. I would have never thought of making tele work mandatory or passing immigration reform to get the government on track to being efficient. Awesome thanks for the ideas, keep em coming.

If something comes to mind I add it. Some are more commentary and several are ideas I submitted from last year. The key here is peer review - if it is good it can rise up and may get attention.
