If you do not come to work during the furlough, you DO NOT get paid. period.
SSA payment center , one of the seven in the country, have been told to come in to work regardless of a furlough. In the past, everyone got paid EVEN if you did not come to work.
SO,
The TOP SALARIED people under the Regional Commisionner have been told NOT to come in.
I say DO NOT PAY ANYONE (except emergency or scheduled) if they do not come to work - save money.
I completely disagree. It is not my fault that Congress and the Senate can't get it together to pass the budget. I am a one income family and if I don't get paid then it will be devastating to my family. I say don't pay Congress or the Senate until they straighten this mess out.
Don't pay Congress. They are the ones who did not do their job. Keep everyone at work, doing what they do and dock the pay of the people who failed at their jobs, The President and Congress, until they pass a continuing resolution or budget.
And if you come to work, you're being asked to work for free! The threatened government shutdown is a faux crisis that we have to deal with as if we don't have enough to do. What if all federal employees worked just their 8.5? We give up so much annual and comp already.
In the past, the govt has foolishly released back pay. Don't come to work , don't get paid. We can learn off private industry on this one instead of the entitlement mentality of the govt wkr.
In the past, the government has made workers come to work and given us an IOU letter to show banks, credit card companies, etc. It basically said, someday, when COngress and the President. (Newt and Clinton, at that time) finally start acting like adults, the federal government will start paying their employees. In the meantime, they are required to work without pay, for as long as it takes, up to one year. This was allowed by a Federal Judge who, in my opinion, either does not know what a law book is or owed someone a favor. How we can be treated like indentured servants is beyond me but that is the law, only Congress and the President get paid and, in the event of furlough, they are the ones who shutdown the government. So, the people who in the mid-1990s did not get their job done were the only ones getting paid timely. No ever said life is fair!
