Ideas to Make Other Parts of Government More Efficient and Effective »

I believe that the government’s telework policy is flawed. With more and more employees taking advantage of the program; more and more customer are not getting timely assistance, and when there are no employees in the office to assist the customer, they ask to speak to a manager or a supervisor to complain. Then, I have to tell the already angry customer, I’m sorry they are not in the office today, because they are working form an alternate work place. How does this help our customers, if we make ourselves unavailable?

  1. Why are you allowing employees that provide face to face customer support to telework? That sounds like 'essential personnel' to me. There are limitations to telework, and that's one of them. You can deny telework you know. Its not a right of the employee, its a tool that can be used 'if' used with common sense.

  2. With the rush to jump on the telework band wagon here at our department, some problems have cropped up and no one on telework wants to ruin a good thing, even if it is hurting our customer service efforts.

  3. it doesn't sound like the definition of telework to me. telework is not about being incommunicado. much of my customer service is over the phone and email. is there a special reason that both customer and consultant meet physically? the "tele" of telework implies connection, not a disappearing act.

  4. I agree. Telework should be limited to those jobs that do not require face-to-face with the customer or co-workers. However, it's not necessarily the fault of the telework policy itself, but how it's implemented.

Teleworkers should make themselves as available to customers and coworkers when necessary as when they are at the office. Teleworkers should also not expect other people who are at the office to do the stuff for them that they can't do from home.

  5. just because there are bumps and problems, that is not a good reason to run from progressive notions. you make improvements- not run away. with all the bugs in computer technology, there would have been plenty of argumants against them. but over time, this tool has improved, but not because the notion was abandoned.

  6. Teleworking, if implemented correctly (selecting the right positions and the right employees for teleworking), there should be no interruption of services. If there is, halt teleworking and re-evaluate your policy, the jobs designated for teleworking, and the employee fit for teleworking.

  7. Where I work we transfer calls to wherever we are working. This isn't a problem. We are available wherever we are.

  8. Great Comment - Telework is not for Government in 99 percent of cases. My comment from another post.

Telework never works because most of the people given that option will be goofing off at home! Those that won't/don't will not have access to the information they need at home or at a telework center and will be calling colleagues and not be able to collaborate with others at the office, there are some jobs that are amenable to working from home, and those are usually private entities. They almost always require office space in the home dedicated to that, pay for the office furniture and phone lines and insist that the person maintains a business like environment in that space, no barking dogs or kids crying. 99 percent of these jobs are not with the government. There is a reason we are public servants, because we serve the public from a federal building and not our living room. This whole idea is totally unprofessional and instead of employees abusing purchase cards by going to strip clubs we are going to see the IG arresting people "working" while mowing thier lawns or sleeping. This may work for 1 percent of federal jobs for the rest it will be a nightmnare and PR disaster!

  9. Frankly, I dont want my personal information being accessed by some employee in thier living room where who can see the computer screen is not controlled. Telework is already a fiasco and will be an even bigger one if allowed to take hold, personal, sensitive and who sees it can never be controlled in someone's home.
