This has been recommended a few times in this forum and is an outstanding idea.

just what the working class and poor need- yet another in a long line of regressive taxes. in some locales, with their sales tax, this could amount to 50% of some peoples' income. real fair. so by all means, give the corporations and top one percent more of our comonwealth. poor things have it too hard.

excellent idea and get rid of the IRS too!

Amen and instead of tax everybodys check just add a tax which would be a set limit on all items and then when you buy stuff you would pay a tax on it. Very simple.

Yep, let's give another tax break to the rich, slam the poor and middle class some more, Great idea. NOT! The IRS get paid to handle taxes. earn your pay and deal with it.

Yeah, GE paid no taxes on billions in income here and around the world.
Flat corp tax, flat people tax, spend less than you make, balance budget or congress doesn't get paid every year.

A flat income tax is a flat percentage. Example: Everyone pays 15% of their annnual income. Everyone pays fair amount. No 'slam the poor.'

I agree with the flat tax idea, this way everyone pays. As for tax on goods, if you don't need it, don't buy it. State, local, federal etc, should be capped at no more than 20% of your income, and government can't ever raise it.
Corporations fought for the right to be treated as individuals, so let them pay their share as well. I think if everyone knows they have to set aside a certain amount of their income for taxes every year, we'll have a more stable system.
Oh, and Congress, let's cut those serve one term and get a pension deals while we are cutting stuff.

Yeah for the Flat Tax Idea. Everyone should pay the same flat percentage... welfare recipients should also compensate the states they live in by providing an equal share of work for the benefits they recveive. Let them baby sit for someone who works, or pick up trash to contribute back to the community. If everyone paid a fair share, regardless of what they earn, we wouldn't be in the state we are in today. Quit giving the rich more and the poor less.... do the math.

I'm not sure "No 'Slam the Poor'" is a very well-reasoned response. The current income tax system is progressive. In fact, after deductions, credits and exemptions, they say about 47% of the population does not currently pay federal income tax. So to suggest that it would not result in the poor paying significantly more than they do now is patently false.
The fairness theory involved in the argument is straightforward, but as always, you have to determine whether the theory can be applied in practice. For example, if a person makes $20,000/year (approximately $10/hr, 40 hr/week), can that individual reasonably afford to pay $3,000 in federal income taxes in addition to the $1,530 in payroll taxes and still meet all of their needs? Excluding the issue of state tax, this would give the person a mere $15,470/yr ($1289/mo).
That's the math. Given that currently the poor tend to spend a very high percentage of their monthly earnings, almost every dollar shifted to paying taxes would be shifted out of domestic consumer spending. The poor--who already often struggle with household debt--would find themselves further stretched to pay for the basics, and the economy would take a serious hit as demand for non-essentials shriveled up. Now I don't have an advanced degree in economics, but I suspect that would be a bad thing for U.S. businesses as well.

Great idea! This will eliminate the need for the useless, harassing, non-productive IRS.

Flat tax is not the best idea, but the "fair tax" is. It provides a safety net for the poor--their net tax would be zero--e.g., if the tax rate was 20%, everyone would receive a tax prebate of 20% x the poverty rate. So if poverty is defined as $20k, everyone would receive a prebate of $4k. Also, there would be no "payroll" tax, as one commenter is lamenting--you get to keep your whole paycheck.

The flat tax works. If the poor pay their fair share of their income tax, and if their overall annual income is below the poverty line, they will qualify for welfare programs like food stamps, housing assistance, energy bill assistance, etc. There are Federal and state programs in place to assist the poor for a reason. If an individual earning $20K ends up paying $4K in taxes, they still could be receiving more money in benefits than they pay in taxes, but they’re working and paying their taxes.
A flat tax rate is simpler and better.

FLAT TAX IS A FANTASTIC IDEA!!!! This will get the government out of debt AND make sure everyone is paying their equal share. Of course we should continue a no tax policy on basic items like milk and bread, but a flat tax on everything works. You also get all of the ILLEGALS to pay in to the tax system. Right now they make up fake social security numbers, send their money home, and then no one is surprised when their W2 returns because of a bad address.
ENOUGH WITH THE HANDOUTS!!! If you want socialism, move somewhere else. Everyone needs to work and everyone needs to pay (except the truly disabled and children). People do not have incentive to do better when they are constantly provided for.

And the flat tax should be 15%. The current brackets are 10%, 15%, 25% and 35%. A 15% flat tax would be a compromise. Also, those who make more will put more money back in to the economy because they will have it. I know tons of small business owners who are barely making it because of our tax system; and no they are not "rich" by any means.
