Congressional pay raises

Members of Congress should not be allowed to set their own salary without regard to performance, profit, or economic climate. They should not be allowed to set their salaries at all, nor give themselves raises.

  1. Additionally, ANY raise or topic or benefit should be WIDELY and PUBLICLY reviewed long in advance and based upon performance as monitored by independent/objective groups-------NEVER allowed to vote for or approved themselves. Such things should be CLOSELY tied to the raise and/or benefits the common man gets (based on that governmental persons decisions, or the influence thereto).

  2. They could stand to have a massive reduction in pay also considering all the fringe benefits associated with their positions (aids, staff, drivers, etc)

  3. This is where the gov't reform should start. Congress works for us so we should be able to vote as to whether or not a raise is due to them!

  4. I agree. Share the pain. How can we respect a Congress, President or Supreme Court that is exempting themselves from the same pain? I am aware that a bill has been proposed to reduce Congressional pay 10%. I don't know for what period of time that would apply, but it should be permanent as they have received many raises greater than those on Medicare. Congress, President and Supreme Court need more severe cuts. But equity is the rule here. We are ALL civil servants, and the same rules should apply to all. Congress and the President should be under the same restrictions they impose on us. They should not be allowed recess until they get their job done i.e. budget. We are the ones who maintain stability, order and normalcy for the country between administration changes, crises, etc.
