Big Idea Bounties

Place a one million dollar bounty on major innovations discovered in the university system, or the private sector. The research team, or individual, that theoretically perfects the biosphere concept, or invents the next generation of solar concentrators, is given a government reward of one million dollars, to help them start the business that brings it to the masses.

  1. Sounds like a neat concept, that makes sense, but isn't that what the government grants are for?

  2. Pretty much, grant money is more restrictive though... I'd like to see more people tinkering in their basement, hoping to be a millionaire. Even if they don't use the million to bring the invention to the masses, I just want people to know that if you make a major breakthrough, you're rewarded.

The truth is, if I was really going to implement this system, it would have billion dollar bounties, but the entire country would vote for the top 3-5 problems it really wants to solve. Surviving on mars, being completely energy neutral at home with no grid, curing cancer... etc. It's really a theory about how to make socialism work through implementation of capitalist government programs.

A lot of my solutions work this way, merit based pay for contractors for example, would be another example of how the government could actually encourage capitalism rather than destroy it. People are always talking about how we're "turning socialist under Obama", but we've been a socialist democracy for decades... All contract workers that do labor, get paid exactly the same, and have no health insurance. Bush was all about hiring more contractors, that's socialism. Some people are just intentionally ignoring it, rather than looking for pragmatic solutions... I like to think that a government guarantee, that if you invent the next great revolutionairy technology, you will be a billionaire, would be a great step towards making a socialist society, that actually incentivizes innovation and good work... It's an extremely unpopular philosophy though, and I have to admit, it could simply be because some of my premises are incorrect.
